Women's Education and Leadership Institute (WELI)

WELI strives to increase college completion rates among female students in the Salinas Valley. With the support of the WELI Program, WELI Scholars of Hartnell College will achieve their leadership potential and attain personal, academic, and professional success. WELI Scholars receive the following benefits:

Program elements include:

  • Leadership Training: Three day training to develop critical life skills such as budgeting and communication.
  • Mentor Program: Female community leaders serve as WELI Mentors and provide guidance and support to scholars.
  • Scholarship Award: At completion of Leadership Training, students receive a $1,250 award. An additional $1,250 is awarded upon completion of the mentor workshops.

To qualify for WELI, students must apply in Spring of each year. Cisgender and transgender female students are welcomed. Student applications will be selected based upon academic achievement in context of adversity, financial need, and leadership potential. Other eligibility requirements may apply.

Eligibility:

  • Must be a current Hartnell student, enrolled in at least 9 units who plans on being enrolled at Hartnell for the 2024-2025 Academic Year 
  • Maintain enrollment in at least 9 units* each semester (exceptions made under special circumstances, such as DSPS*)
  • Maintain a 2.5 GPA or higher
  • *Former WELI recipients are not eligible to apply.

Cisgender and transgender applicants welcome

Applicants must be able to participate in:

  • Leadership Workshops being held (must attend all):
    • August 12, 2024: 9:00am-3:00pm
    • August 13, 2024: 9:00am-3:00pm
    • August 14, 2024: 9:00am-3:00pm
  • Quarterly Mentor Meetings taking place on (must attend all)
    • Dates to be announced at a later date. Typically, we meet in September/October, February and April on a Saturday from 10-2pm.

Men's Institute for Leadership and Education (MELI)

The MILE scholarship is designed to increase the leadership capacity, workforce skills, college enrollment, and college completion rate of men.

Program elements include:

  • Mentor Program: Community leaders serve as MILE Mentors and provide guidance and support to scholars.
  • Scholarship Award: At completion of Leadership Training, students receive a $1,250 award. An additional $1,250 is awarded upon completion of the quarterly mentor workshops.

To qualify for MILE, students must apply in the Spring. Cisgender and transgender male students are welcomed. Student applications will be selected based upon academic achievement in context of adversity, financial need, and leadership potential. Other eligibility requirements may apply.
