Department of Supportive Programs & Services (DSPS)

The Department of Supportive Programs and Services (DSPS) provides confidential services to students with disabilities who are participating in Hartnell College’s programs and activities, across all campuses and educational centers.  DSPS offers specialized counseling, eligibility for disability accommodations and services, learning disability assessment, as well as Learning Skills classes and Adapted Physical Education classes. 

Current or Returning DSPS Students

Students with disabilities who have completed their registration with DSPS, need to request disability accommodations and services each semester by meeting with a DSPS Counselor for an Accommodation Letter to be issued.

Students New to DSPS or Hartnell

As a student new to DSPS or Hartnell, you will need to complete the registration and intake process with a DSPS counselor, before eligibility for accommodations and services can begin.

Students seeking information about learning disability services should schedule an appointment with a Learning Disability Specialist through the DSPS office. Students may refer themselves, or they may be referred by an instructor or counselor.

Services & Accommodations

Hartnell College offers supportive services and instruction for students with disabilities through DSPS.  To facilitate student success in academics and personal development, DSPS provides services, instruction, and accommodations, such as:

Testing accommodations: Extended time on exams and quizzes and/or reduced (quiet) testing environment
Courses: Priority registration and/or reduced course load (taking fewer than 12 units)
Classroom Accommodations: Note-taking and recording accommodations, adapted classroom furniture, priority seating.
Deaf/Hard of Hearing Services: American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting and real-time captioning
Alternative media: E-books, Braille, large print
Assistive/Adaptive Technology and Devices: Screen reading and voice recognition software, CCTV (and a variety of screen magnification technologies), CCTV (and a variety of screen magnification technologies), note-taking software, digital recorders, smartpens
Use of the High Tech Lab in DSPS
Educational planning: both preliminary and full education plans
Educational Assistance Classes: Learning skills classes and adapted physical education classes
