How We Can Assist You and Your Students

Class Instruction

The librarians in the Reference Department can provide instruction for your classes on using library materials, the online catalog, electronic databases, internet research, and on developing information research strategies useful in your subject area.

General group tours can provide your whole class with an overview of our resources and services. Librarians can place special emphasis on material for your course.

Instruction can focus on any of our resources, including:

  • OneSearch, which searches most of our resources at once
  • EBSCOhost databases featuring Academic Search Complete
  • CQ Researcher, CINAHL, or any other individual database
  • How to locate resources through the Internet

To schedule an in-person library instructional session, use our booking calendar. The library classroom has 40 seats and 34 student-use computers. If your students will need additional computers, please request laptops on the reservation form. If you have more than 40 students, please request an online orientation instead.

To schedule a synchronous online session (meeting via Zoom) at all campuses, contact Cynthia Ainsworth. Please provide at least two proposed dates/times, and information about the assignment.

Please make arrangements at least one week in advance. For further information, contact the Reference Department at 759-6078.

You may also direct your students to our YouTube channel, or embed our Library Instructional Orientation in your Canvas shell.

Collection Development

Hartnell librarians select books and other resources for the library's collections. You are encouraged to contact and work with liaison librarians to develop and improve the library's collections by recommending purchases for the library's collections.

Course Reserves

Course reserve is a service through which faculty make textbooks, videos, lecture notes or other learning materials available for a limited time period. You may place personal copies of instructional material on reserve for a given class. Print the Course Reserve Form (pdf) beforehand or ask for a copy at the circulation desk. See our Course Reserves page for more information.

Instructional Support

The Reference Librarians can provide printed materials, including bibliographies, instructional handouts, and pathfinders relevant to your subject areas. We also provide Research Guides on various topics.

The Library Research Workshop contains six modules designed to build students' information literacy skills. You are welcome to assign the entire workshop or individual modules to students; they will receive certificates of completion when finished. (Many professors offer extra credit for completing the workshop!)
